LCFD Fire Marshal Information
The Lumpkin County Fire and EMS appreciates our businesses and homeowners making their homes and businesses more fire safe by installing fire alarms. Early detection and warning systems aid the fire department by catching trouble in the early stages. Our response time can be decreased if you have a monitored fire alarm system. However, every year we respond to a significant number of false alarms.
We want to encourage everyone to maintain their systems in a functioning manner. The County has an ordinance that addresses false alarms. A false alarm means the activation of a signal from a fire alarm system that elicits a response from the fire department when there in fact is no emergency or actual or threatened emergency that necessitates such a response.
This definition includes, but is not limited to, any system activated as a result of weather, negligence, accident, mechanical failure, and electrical failure, and electrical surge, signals activated intentionally in non-emergency situations and signals where the actual cause of such activation is unknown. There is a rebuttable presumption that an activated fire alarm signal is a false alarm if the responding personnel, after following normal procedures in their response and investigation, find no evidence of an emergency.
It is a violation of the County ordinance to cause, allow or permit three or more false alarms in any calendar year. no person shall intentionally make, turn in, or report a false alarm of fire or aid and abet in the commission of such an act.
For the third false alarm that occurs at the same premises within a calendar year, a fine of up to $100.00 shall be imposed upon each responsible party. For the fourth false alarm, a fine of up to $250.00 shall be imposed, and for the fifth and each subsequent false alarm, a fine of up to $1000.00 shall be imposed upon each responsible party.
